The second meeting of MATLAB fans was held in Brno on the 11th of January. Our chosen topic was Digital Signal Processing with MATLAB and Simulink. More than 50 people attended to hear about the new capabilities in this area.

The fifth Reactive Brno Meetup was headlined by Matúš “Maty” Fedák, who works as a coder at VacuumLabs — the company behind ReactiveConf.

Maty’s presentation was on Datomic. During his talk, many questions were asked and there were also plenty of pizza and beers consumed.

On Thursday, December 1 there was another Docker meetup in our Wine cellar at Hllinky 102 in Brno. We learnt more about containers from four senior speakers, all from different companies:

Evgeny Shmarnev from SUSE taught us how to secure and manage an on-premise Docker registry with Portus.
Roman Galeev from 2600Hz talked about using Docker to ease development — testing, packaging and deployment, especially for Erlang applications.
Michal Fojtik from Red Hat gave a brief introduction to Kubernetes and OpenShift, showing us how it can be used to orchestrate containerized applications.
Tomas Holcman from Kiwi.com showed us how to manage a globally distributed, highly available application with AWS and Rancher.

We organised a public data challenge competition to create a flight delays algorithm based on the large, real Kiwi.com historical dataset.

79 teams applied, and 17 teams were invited for the Award Ceremony.

On Wednesday, 26 October at 18:00 in the Kiwi.com wine cellar, we rewarded the 3 teams that created the best prediction algorithms with Kiwi.com vouchers worth 2,000 EUR.

A new community of MATLAB users and fans has been set up in Brno. The first meeting of the Brno MATLAB Meetup Group was held on November 3rd. The selected topic was Data Analytics with MATLAB and it resonated with people. More than 80 attendees decided to come and hear about the new MATLAB capabilities in this area.
